Hc380/590tr Phase Change Induced Plastic Steel information

TRIP steel is a super high strength steel with increased plasticity caused by the progressive martensitic transformation process in the steel structure. In 1967, V.F. Ackay et al. designed a low carbon and high alloy metastable austenitic steel containing a large amount of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, manganese and silicon. The martensitic point Ms(upper limit of temperature at which deformation causes martensitic transformation) of this steel is lower than room temperature. After low temperature deformation treatment (76%~80% deformation at 450℃), the Md point becomes higher than room temperature, but the Ms point is still much lower than room temperature (less than 196℃). The microstructure of the steel is characterized by fine dispersed alloy carbide and high density dislocation in austenite.
The austenitic steel with this structure will change the austenite into martensite at the crack front when it is subsequently used at room temperature due to stress concentration at the crack front. Because the formation of martensite requires a large amount of energy, which makes the propagation of cracks difficult, it increases both the strength of steel (martensite strengthening) and the fracture toughness (KIC) (energy consumption for propagation of cracks).
The Plasticity resulting from this progressive local martensitic Transformation is known as Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP). The composition and properties of the phase change induced plastic steel are shown in the table. This steel is the ultra high strength and tough steel with the best fracture toughness available. The KIC can reach 17.7 mn. m at room temperature and 4.6 mn. m at 196℃.
